Spur

A platform of products that help musicians capture, curate and share spur of the moment creativity.

Spur

Project Overview

  • Role and Responsibilities

A personal project where I wanted to create a service experience that focuses on physical touchpoints which are supported by a digital experiences.

  • Challenge

Aspiring musicians have a difficulty gaining recognition and showcasing their work due to the monopolization records labels have. There are also a lack of products and services that support emerging artists and help them progress their career.

  • Solution

A system of products that supports musicians through their entire process of capturing, creating and sharing music. Spur focuses on capturing that “aha” moment by offering a series of products that record instruments while eliminating ambient sound. Collecting these nuggets of music brilliance, users are able to broadcast their process through Spur’s online social network giving them the space to tell their individual story.

  • Origin of Concept

    What Is It?

A music service that offers tools to capture spur of the moment creativity and inspiration while on the go. Unlike existing products and services in the music industry, Spur looks at the overall lifecycle of making music and streamlines the experience by creating tools to capture, create and share work. Spur’s products are portable devices that allow any musical instrument to plug into them while canceling out ambient sound.

How It Works

Process

  • Origin of Concept

    Origin of Concept

To begin understanding how to gauge the amount of data that goes through the Intensive Care Unit (I.C.U.), it was beneficial to compare the different hardware that was in the Emergency Room compared to the I.C.U.

  • User Research

    User Research

By interviewing and observing musicians through the music making process, I was able to observe the pain points in their music creating and recording process. Noticing the patterns between musicians, I used highlighted those issues to identify the opportunities.

  • Competitive Analysis

    Competitive Analysis

Other mobile recording devices vary in quality in both the product and audio recording. For aspiring musicians there are a lack of products that are both affordable but record mid to high level of audio recordings from instruments.

  • Material Exploration

    Material Exploration

By studying popular materials and colors that common musical products used, it helped inspire the the stylization of the concept so that it fit in with user’s existing devices.

  • All in One vs. Customizable Devices

All in One vs. Customizable Devices

Rather than creating a device that would solve every user need, I decided to create a modular system for any instrument that would plug into a smartphone. This allowed scalability to develop the controls for the product through a U.I., while supporting the standardized types of audio chords people would plug into this smartphone attachment.

    Sketches

The ideation phase was focused on creating different types of products that helped users record their music while on the fly, but didn’t interfere with the process.
